Smart was an appropriate term describing the original Mercedes-designed Smart fourtwo introduced in 2003. Able to fit into half the parking space occupied by a regular car yet big on active and passive safety, it is a niche within a niche. With its diminutive size and quirky proportions it’s a sure-fire attention-getter that is surprisingly nippy around town and, occasionally, on the freeway. A new version came in 2008, introducing a non-turbo 1.0-litre 52kW/92Nm three-cylinder engine with more power but less torque than the original turbo 0.7-litre. All fourtwo Smarts run an automated manual five-speed transmission.
