The Boxster came here in 1997 to provide a cheaper, but unmistakably Porsche, experience. The two-seat convertible uses the familiar horizontally-opposed engine formula, but places it ahead of the rear axle for greatly improved weight balance and even better on-road poise - all making for a fabulous drive experience. The engine range is limited to 180kW/273Nm 2.7 and 3.2-litre S versions so the performance – through five and six-speed (S) manual or five-speed auto transmission - is Porsche-rapid rather than Turbo-stratospheric. And if it only accommodates two, at least it’s made practical by having both front and rear luggage compartments.
